About

Glue Gun is an American punk rock band formed in 1991 and fronted by Bob Oedy of The Grim. It started when Oedy responded to an invitation to jam with friends Jeff Roberts (guitar), Peter Newbury (bass) and Mike Winstock (drums) in Winstock’s parent’s garage in West Hills, California. Roberts and Newbury had previously traveled the U.S. with The Grim on their “Brave the Cold” Winter Tour  in 1985-1986 with NOFX, and Scared Straight.

Glue Gun cut their teeth playing local bars and clubs throughout southern California. From their very first show they worked hard to separate themselves from other local groups by including theatrical stage presentations including props. lights, pyrotechnics, sound effects, weapons, stage blood, sledgehammers, animal heads, televisions, and more.  The band recorded two demo tapes in 1992, one of these early tracks recorded in a garage by Nenus Givargus of Jughead’s Revenge, was eventually released on a compilation by Signal Sound Systems Records.  Other tracks were released on 7-inch vinyl by Fearless Records in 1993. Members Chris Long (guitar), and Jeff Edwards (drums) appeared on these recordings.

Performing on stage with Glue Gun in those early days was dangerous. Band members had to deal with a .38 caliber blank gun being fired off, 8 lbs. sledge hammer and real knife (on one occasion) being wielded on stage, glass from television sets and bootlegged pyrotechnics literally being controlled by a self-proclaimed convicted arsonist (roadie). After one performance at the Anti-Club in Hollywood; Oedy was rushed to the hospital to have pieces of a broken contact lens removed from his eye after being accidentally kicked by a female fan.

Being in the audience didn’t guarantee your safety. There was the girl with frizzy hair who after being pushed from the stage returned to have her hair singed as the pyrotechnics were ignited on queue (left quite a smell), a broken arm from a frozen cow head hurled into the pit, shards of glass from exploding television screens, and that .38 caliber blank gun (you know that’s how Brandon Lee died right?). In 2003 bootlegged pyrotechnics similar to the one’s Glue Gun used were blamed for a terrible accident that took the lives of 100 concert goers at a Great White concert in Rhode Island. It might not have been safe and sane but it was good fun and made for memorable shows.

Glue Gun signed with Posh Boy Records in 1993. Their debut album had already been recorded and was prepped for self-release when Robbie Fields urged the band to allow Posh Boy to step in and re-package the material for commercial release. At the same time, Fields recommended to the band the alternative spelling of Glü Gun, to avoid confusion with a different New Jersey band calling themselves Glue Gun who had already asserted their claim to the name. The album was re-sequenced and eventually released under the title Just Glü It in 1994. Soon after, the band reverted to using the original Glue Gun spelling.

By the end of 1994, Glue Gun regrouped and added three new band members: George Snow (guitar), John North (bass) and Jody Kern (drums). Oedy and Roberts were the only two remaining original members at the time. Glue Gun released their second album The Scene Is Not for Sale in 1995 which was available on 12” vinyl, CD and cassette. Glue Gun appeared on the Punk Sucks compilation record on Liberation Records in 1995. Glue Gun toured the U.S. in 1996 completing the tour with a festival show in Las Vegas, Nevada supporting Strung Out. In 1996 Glue Gun contributed one song to the Punk Bites compilation on Fearless Records. Their music has been appeared in Motocross videos and videogames. Later members included, Bob Raft, What Up Brother, Brian Preiss, Joey Rimicci, Andy Alvarez, Jason Berkman, and Garrett Dyer. You may have seen Glue Gun on television appearing on Fox News. Glue Gun played at The Divebar in Las Vegas in 2015 as an unofficial kickoff to Punk Rock Bowling. In 2016 Glue Gun played a charity event with Rikk Agnew at Punk Rock Swap Meet in support of underprivileged kids. Over the years the band has performed with such acts as NOFX, Offspring, Strung Out, No Use for a Name, ill Repute, China White, Guttermouth, Ten Foot Pole, The Grim, With Liberty, Pulley, and many others.
